Editing a Small Part of the Dance Sequence

After lesson had finished me Megan stayed and edited through our lunch, we was looking at and editing the dance bits using the shots of the feet, so the low angle shots and the mid shots of the upper body these parts were all filmed handheld with out the tripod which gives the footage a unique feel to it. After looking through the footage with Megan I started placing bits together and then discussing with Megan whether they fit or worked well together. After doing this for about 25 minutes or so I had created a 14 second long dance piece which fit perfectly with the song and flowed at the pace I needed it to. This small piece of our music video looks a good standard after we also changed the saturation of the footage so that it comes out in black and white, this adds a different mood to the piece as a whole because it changes the audiences perception of the the music video.

This is the section of which we edited.

Filming part of the dance sequence

Laxmi and I filmed the start of the ballet scenes of Grace today. We started badly though as the room we had originally planned to use was occupied by someone else which meant that we had to change room. In the room we was shooting in there were no spotlights which meant we had to use a studio lamp that laxmi borrowed from art, although it was not the best quality it give the shots an added effect anyway. The shots that we managed  to get were of a good quality and with a little editing can be made to look very professional. The costume being white looked amazing against the darkness around Grace; it showed the idea of negative spacing. The camera we used the Cannon 500d with a 50mm lens looked really good, however there was an issue with the amount of lighting being let into the camera so next time we may use the 1200d instead. We will need to film the dance at least one more time to get the narrative side of it as well as some other shots of the ballet.

Experimenting with the 50mm lens

In this lesson we had not planned anything due to both our actors being busy and having no new footage to edit. We decided to have a discussion on how previous shoots had been, so whether they had gone well or not and why? One problem we had that came up was the lack of quality on some of our filming, so I looked into if the school had any other lenses which we could use and it turns out they had a 50mm lens. This was great and is exactly what we need as with this lens we create a depth of field. "A depth of field is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appears acceptably sharp in an image" so basically it means that we can pull focus on certain objects/people and leave others out of the focus making them appear blurred. I decided to try this lens out and see how good it was for myself firstly on a moving target which was me and then secondly targets which are stationary.

After watching these 2 clips, you can see that this lens gives so much more of a professional look to them and can really be of use to us when filming the narrative and dance scenes, and give our music video that little something special about it.

A film that uses the focus pull technique quite well and shows us a depth of field is the end part of "Whiplash" where it is showing a lot of detail all around the drum kit while he is playing.

Planning for the narrative shoot

We have just created another schedule for when we are going out to film, where and with who this makes it clear to everyone when they need to be free and able to shoot:

2nd Screening

This is our second screening of Battlefield, so what we have so far and the rough cut. We knew already we still do have enough shots and that almost most of them need to be retaken because of small errors also we have learned what bits need to be different and why from the feedback that we received. Hopefully by the next time we screen it we will have much more footage.

3rd feedback on blog (Shaun)

This is my third blog feedback from Shaun, from this I know that I need to upload more stuff as other people in my group have uploaded much more than I have. I now know what main blog posts I'm missing and need to do to get my blog fully up to date. I know as well that i need to finish my blog in order to be able to film and edit my music video.

Planning and Prep

In the two hours lesson we decided we would plan our availability so Laxmi drew this visual plan of everyones availability, so from this we can see when everyone can shoot and what days are not available for shooting. From this we all agreed that there always be at least 2 members of the group at all times while filming.

After doing this we was able to create a a production log to see when we was all filming next and which bit, we even colour coded it so all Graces bit we are filming are in yellow compared to all of Poppy's bits are in pink.
